Two days in Zagreb do not have to become a race between landmarks. For an enjoyable weekend, simply connect a few interesting places, make time for a good meal and have a backup plan in case the weather changes the city's mood.
This is our suggested itinerary, rather than a guided tour or a compulsory checklist. Change the order, skip anything that does not appeal to you and leave at least one unplanned break. If you are staying at Big Smile at Bračunova 14a in Črnomerec, choose a route that suits your day before each outing.
Friday: arrival and a gentle introduction
Leave your first evening for settling in, unpacking and resting after your journey. If you have the energy, choose a short walk around the centre and dinner; if you arrive late, feel free to move the main sightseeing to Saturday.
Ban Josip Jelačić Square can be the starting point for getting to know the city. Without setting high expectations, explore a few streets, choose somewhere to eat and agree on what matters most to you tomorrow. One or two destinations chosen together are easier to fit in than a long list that leaves everyone little time to enjoy themselves.
Saturday morning: the centre, Kaptol and the rhythm of the market
After breakfast, head towards the centre and connect the main square with Kaptol. If you would like to visit the cathedral, check official information in advance. In September 2026, the archdiocese reported its reopening alongside continuing restoration; works and worship may affect visits.
For a market experience, follow the current guidance from Zagreb Markets. According to a January 2026 notice, Dolac traders continued operating at temporary locations in nearby streets and on part of the main square. Check today's layout, then leave time to browse the goods and take a break of your choosing.
Saturday late morning: the Upper Town and one museum
Devote the next part of your sightseeing to the Upper Town. Include the Stone Gate and the surrounding historic streets in a walk using accessible passages. Take time for details and rest, especially if you are travelling with children or find uphill walks uncomfortable.
As a possible addition, choose the Museum of Broken Relationships in the Upper Town. Its objects and personal stories bring a different tone to sightseeing. If the subject does not appeal to you, replace it with another museum from the official listings and current programme. One attentive visit is quite enough for this part of the day.
Saturday afternoon: lunch and Zrinjevac
Make lunch a proper break, without counting how many more sights you need to reach. Afterwards, we suggest Zrinjevac: this city-centre park with its music pavilion and tree-lined paths fits nicely into a calmer continuation of the day.
If you would like to keep walking, add part of the Lower Town. If you are tired, shorten the route and leave the evening free. For a concert, performance or special event, look at the current programme and check whether you need tickets. Your weekend will be more enjoyable if your plans follow your energy.
Sunday: greenery or a little more culture
On a sunny or pleasant day, we suggest Maksimir. Adapt your walk along paths, through wooded areas and past lakes to the time you have before your return journey. This can be your main Sunday outing, so there is no need to add several more distant destinations.
If culture suits you better, choose an exhibition or museum you skipped on Saturday. Check Sunday opening hours on the institution's website. Before leaving, allow enough time to collect your belongings and travel to the station, airport or your next stop.
How to make the weekend suit you
Use a rainy day for a longer museum visit and a leisurely meal, and move the park to a more favourable part of the weekend. For families, we suggest fewer stops and more frequent breaks; for couples, one experience chosen together; for solo travellers, room to explore according to their own curiosity.
For getting around the city, check ZET's current information on routes and tickets. The funicular returned to service in May 2026, but read the operator's notices before your planned ride. The best itinerary is one that sends you home with happy memories, rather than feeling that you had to complete a task.
