Advent is Zagreb's liveliest season: squares and parks fill with lights, music and festive stalls, and visitors come from across the region and Europe.

This guide covers the confirmed dates for 2026, the locations tendered by the City of Zagreb and practical tips for getting there from Big Smile Apartments at Bračunova 14a.

When is Advent in Zagreb 2026?

According to the City of Zagreb's tenders, Advent in Zagreb 2026 runs from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Thursday 7 January 2027. Some locations may open as early as 25 November. The first Sunday of Advent is 29 November.

The detailed programme, opening hours and list of stalls are usually published two to three weeks before the start. Check the official Advent and Zagreb Tourist Board websites before you travel.

Where does Advent take place?

For 2026, the city has tendered the central locations: Ban Jelačić Square, European Square, Eugen Kvaternik Square, Zrinjevac, Strossmayer Square, King Tomislav Square and part of the Upper Town with the Strossmayer Promenade and Plato Gradec. Stalls are also planned in neighbourhoods such as Trešnjevka, Dubrava, Sesvete, Novi Zagreb, Stenjevec and Podsused-Vrapče.

Zrinjevac is known for its tree-lined paths decorated with lights, the Strossmayer Promenade for its views over the rooftops of the Lower Town, and in recent years King Tomislav Square in front of the main railway station has hosted the Ledeni park ice rink. The official programme confirms the final line-up.

Getting there from Big Smile Apartments

Big Smile Apartments is at Bračunova 14a, about a 2-minute walk from the Črnomerec tram terminus. Trams 6 and 11 run directly to Ban Jelačić Square, and line 6 continues towards the main railway station and King Tomislav Square. From Ban Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac and European Square are just a few minutes' walk away.

During Advent, special traffic arrangements often apply in the centre and parking fills up quickly. Leave your car in our free guest car park and take the tram into town. Check ZET for tickets and the latest line information.

An Advent evening plan

In the late afternoon, walk around the Upper Town and along the Strossmayer Promenade while it is still light. At dusk, head down to Ban Jelačić Square and Zrinjevac as the lights come on. Continue the evening at European Square or Eugen Kvaternik Square, and choose King Tomislav Square if you want to go skating.

Crowds are smaller on weekdays and earlier in the afternoon than on Friday and Saturday evenings. Dress warmly, bring a card and some cash, and agree on a meeting point if you are travelling with children.
